Bed Wedge Pillows
Here’s some REALLY good information that could be potentially LIFE CHANGING!
As we get older, the wear on our body parts begins to take its’ toll, not just when we’re active, but also when we lay our heads down to sleep, either during an afternoon nap, or a full sleep at night. One body part in particular that can become quite the nuisance when we lay down and become horizontal is the little muscle between the stomach and the esophagus known as the Lower Esophageal Sphincter, or LES.
The LES muscle is supposed to function as a one-way valve; allowing food and drink to head south to the stomach and beyond, but allowing nothing to pass in the northward direction. These north and south directions, of course, only apply when we are vertical. Over time, the LES muscle can become weak, and not form a really tight valve between the stomach and the esophagus, much like a leaky faucet.
Even if the LES muscle should start to become a little weak and leaky, you may not notice it during the day (being vertical) unless you eat lots of spicy or acidic foods. However, when we lie down at night and become flat and horizontal, a leaky LES muscle can allow acids from inside the stomach to flow back towards our esophagus, a direction of acid flow that shouldn’t happen in a healthy scenario. That very common affliction is known as GERD, or GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease. When GERD, or “reflux”, or “acid reflux” occurs, you’ll typically experience heartburn and nausea, and that can make getting a good night’s sleep challenging.
There are typically 2 ways to address a GERD problem; with drugs or with a change in physical body positioning. I’m not a doctor, so I can’t tell you when a GERD problem does or doesn’t require an intervention of drugs. But what I can tell you from experience is that in many cases, just forcing the stomach acids to stay in the stomach and not flow northwards to the esophagus will fix the problem. At least it does for me, every single time. All you need is a bed wedge, or wedge pillow!
That’s right, a pillow shaped like a right triangle. It’s useful for addressing GERD problems when oriented one way, and quite comfortable when watching TV in bed, when oriented the other way. It can also be useful to combat snoring issues!
I encounter GERD maybe 5 times a month on average, and when I “wedge up” the problem dissipates within 5 minutes or so. I invite you to shop around and learn more about this handy little tool that can really make your life more pleasant. A good night’s sleep is invaluable.Wedge pillows are made by many different manufacturers and are sold at many fine retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond and other retail outlets.
